They have never had to show them to someone because they were lost, but it is peace of mind for us. They still used them the last time we went to WDW and they are now 6 and 9.

You do have to show your Disney Visa, and then wait for your meet w/the characters (usually 15-30 min., depending on the crowd). Your group is in the room alone with the characters. You can take photos with your own camera, but the PhotoPass photographer will also take pics. They will give you a voucher to pick out one of the photos at the photo center (near Spaceship Earth) after 5 p.m. until closing. It usually takes just a few minutes for your photo to print. (Again, there could be a significant wait at the photo center, depending on when you go.)
